STREET SECURITY PLAN
PURPOSE OF THE INITIATIVE
- Due to the alarming increase in crime in nearly all our areas, it has become extremely important to take drastic measures to ensure the safety of ALL residents as far as it is humanly possible.
2 Due to the organised nature of crime, it is impossible for any security company or police vehicle to be in every street at all times. We therefore need to equip our community in each street with the necessary skills and knowledge to understand crime and the criminal mind, in order to effective combat it in each street.
STREET ACTIVATION
3 We are in the process of mobilising all our streets by creating street groups in all our areas, which we will use to communicate a practical security plan in order to increase the safety of all.
STREET GROUPS
4 These groups are not social platforms hence the need for discipline and compliance with the protocol to follow. If we use it in this manner, we will increase our crime prevention and detection capability and take our streets back.
STREET GROUP SUPPORT
5 All street groups are co-ordinated by street administrators. The KCVA will provide all security and other emergency support free of charge.
STREET GROUP PROTOCOL
- Posts on the street groups must be limited to security related and emergency related matters.
- This includes but is not limited to the matters contained in the street plan below.
- No social communication or advertisements are allowed on the street groups.
- No posts of any political, offensive or dividing nature are allowed.
- No information of any member of any street group may be shared with any other person or entity without the prior approval of the affected Member and the street Administrator.
- Street Administrators are to ensure that this communication protocol is adhered to.
- Street Administrators must ensure that the street plan is available to residents.
- In order to ensure access to the KCVA support structure, Administrators are to list all residents that are not on the KCVA Security Groups and supply the list to Erica, 082 337 9611 or Deon 084 788 8580 for such residents to be added.
- Street Administrators are to see to it that the street plan in implemented.
- Street Administrators are to encourage all street members to attend the KCVA Street Activation presentations.
11 No posts on the KCVA Security Groups are to be duplicated on the street groups except in cases of Lookout, Crime or Emergency Reports and where not all street group members are on the KCVA Security Groups. The reason for this arrangement will become evident when the Street Plan is read.
STREET PLAN
HOME
- Security starts at home. Secure your most vulnerable areas, which are your doors and windows. When doing this, the aim is to make entry difficult but exit easy.
- Ensure that your sidewalk and garden is clear of hiding places. We can achieve this by increasing the lighting of such areas.
- Check your garden and sidewalk as often as possible for any objects which presence weather conditions or littering cannot account for. Look out for objects that are placed in an arrow or triangular shape, pointing in a specific direction. Also, keep an eye out for objects that are parallel to each other. This might be ‘battle signs’ that alerts of danger. If you discover such items, take a photograph, report it on the street group and remove it.
- Do not leave any object outside that might be used as a tool or ladder for criminals to perpetrate crime.
- Make sure that your garage, gate and doors are closed at all times.
6 Do not leave any valuable objects or toys outside for criminals to see.
STREET
- Create alternative communication methods with your street neighbours in case of power outages. ‘Toy two-way radio’s” is a good alternative solution. The KCVA will assist with advice and procurement if needed.
- Share the following with all your street residents:
- Details of the vehicles owned or used by the street residents;
- Inform street of expected visitors/service providers;
- Assist each other to watch houses when resident is going out or going to work;
- Assist with dustbin management/checklist of registered collectors;
- Establish a schedule for street patrols that also include street walks, street drives and street braai’s;
- Align your street surveillance with the high risk periods for crime as alerted to by the KCVA;
- When spotting suspicious persons or vehicles, alert all in the street in order to monitor the activity and movement;
- If at all possible procure and save photographs or video footage of such persons or vehicles;
- Identify vulnerable residents in your street. This will include elderly persons and or single moms with small children;
- In case of crime, activate your security plan by closely monitoring the entrance and exit points in your street.
- Recruit street residents as patrollers. The KCVA will train such patrollers and assist with such an initiative;
- Consider installing cameras in your street for –on-site- virtual patrols. The KCVA will assist in that regard;
- Join the KCVA Security Groups as this is your support structure when suspicious persons, vehicles, crime and emergencies are to be reported in order to activate armed response or medical support;
- Assist each other with ‘dustbin management’ in order to avoid dustbins remaining in the streets;
- Alert your street of a late arrival or departure in order for your neighbours to keep an eye to ensure a safe exit and entry;
- Make sure that your residents that are at home during the day keep an eye on the street and report any suspicious activity to the KCVA Security Group;
- List your domestic employees with the KCVA in order to ensure that a data base is kept of all our caretakers and to ensure their safety;
- Train your domestic employees to be vigilant and report suspicious activity. They must be alive to the fact that they are NOT to open the gate for anyone unless you approve such action
