CHAIRMAN’S NOTE 8 July 2020

Dear KCVA Family, As we are racing to the peak of the Covid 19 pandemic, we all feel and see the devastating effect it has. Not only do we now know that the virus is airborne, but all indications are that the prospects of immunity are slim. This invisible enemy has hit our KCVA shores with multiple of our members suffering with infection. In addition to this, crime has increased in all the areas where we have a footprint.

This phenomenon is expected to remain as poverty spreads. We have expected and prepared for this, hence this message of hope and comfort. We must accept that our medium to long-term future will not be the same as the life we were used to, prior to the appearance of Covid 19.

The KCVA has adapted to this reality and is geared to lead our community to a new normality with an assured quality of life. It is crucial that our members fully understand what we aim to achieve and that all embrace this effort as a united collective. Within this new normality, all virus spreading preventative measures must become a way of life and not, as it is currently perceived, a test of endurance. Our perception of time and calendar days have already changed.

We now need to manage such change with new, meaningful routines and priorities. This means we need to increasingly focus on our families, friends and community. Although we might be far apart, we are close to each other as technology allows us to communicate and see each other. The KCVA wishes to better this capacity.

In order to better the wellbeing of our whole community, the KCVA restructured its response to crime and social support by creating its own neighbourhood watch, the Kruin Neighbourhood Watch, (KNW), and expand our Covid 19 Expert Group’s mandate to include guided advice.

The KNW has its own management and is energized to make a huge difference, which it already proved by the recent arrest of cable thieves. Civilian patrols are crucial hence; a standard of 16 patrolling hours per patroller was fixed. We currently have 52 patrollers.

We are also in the process to procure more partners in order to keep our security capacity effective and sustainable. Although opinions differ about Covid 19, we are and will focus on the facts of its impact and will not act on speculative information.

Our members are therefore urged to follow the advice of our experts, as it can easily be the difference between life and death. The wellbeing of our members and community demands utmost care and protection.

Our support systems are designed to ensure the quality of life within the new norm mentioned above. We will take care of those in need, irrespective what the nature of the needs are. In this regard, it is important to understand that there is no shame in seeking help. We are all vulnerable! We will adapt our communication in such a way that all members fully understand the KCVA and the purpose of each initiative and action. All members are encouraged to share ideas on how we can action new ways of getting us to our destination. This way, we will eliminate complacency.

Measured against where we would have been if the KCVA did not exist, we must assess the KCVA on its actions, as promises are void. With this, I embrace all with the warm, sincere and friendly assurance that there is no need for panic, fear or uncertainty. We will continue with this journey as one! There will always be an abundance of helping, caring hands with each stumble. Kind regards Deon KCVA Chairman
