KCVA: CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION ASSIST
The purpose of this series of communications is to equip our members with a basic skill-set that will be extremely valuable in assisting with criminal investigations. This series of ‘information notes’ will also be posted on our Web page and linked Facebook page.
PART 1: CRIME SCENE
PRESERVATION
In the majority of criminal investigations, the main difficulty is to establish the identity of the perpetrator(s). Very few cases of housebreaking, theft and robberies occur in full view of eyewitnesses who know the criminals and or who can identify them.
In such instances forensic evidence such as fingerprints, DNA, Touch DNA as well as ballistic evidence such as spent cartridges and projectiles, is crucial in ensuring arrests and successful prosecutions.
In order for forensic and ballistic evidence to have sufficient probative value in court in order to secure convictions, the integrity thereof needs to be intact. This means that the management of a crime scenes much be proved to have excluded contamination of such evidence.
We need to assist the police and the prosecution in this regard and so increase the reasonable prospect of arrests and successful prosecutions. To assist in this regard, a basic ‘CRIME SCENE PRESERVATION CHECKLIST’ IS INCLUDED HEREWITH.
